Over the past three years, I’ve begun making paintings of urban landscape, particularly in the so-called “Gateway Cities” of Massachusetts. Places like Lowell, Brockton, Taunton, Fall River, and, of course, New Bedford. Shadows of old architectural details, cobblestone byways, brightly painted storefronts, and other survivors of the past offer intriguing mash-ups of not only subject matter, but color, shape and forms. These are the puzzles I long to solve in my paintings.
