The Nigerian born artist Fatima Barros paints iconic imagery reminiscent of the medieval Black Madonna. Each painting incorporates the female face and form that is symbolic of the artist’s sensibility that love is an all embracing and forgiving power.
The surface of each painting is a mixture of relief, collage, paint and experimentation. Flat surfaces and color are juxtaposed against heavily built up areas that hint at textiles, ceramics and stained glass. The simplicity of modernist reduction is balance against the intricate treatment of texture and embedded text.
